Sustainable & Eco-Friendly Mosquito Control Tips

Say no to Joe! This company and others like it offer “effective mosquito control” by regularly open-air spraying synthetic broad-spectrum chemical pesticides. This is not only ineffective, it is killing beneficial bugs, driving away birds, and exposing the pets and familes in your neighborhood to lab-made pyrethroids.

While we do offer an organic substitute spray application when necessary, we prefer to encourage a more sustainable approach to maintaining mosquito population. Spraying, even organic products, is a last-resort effort reserved for after you’ve already taken these measures at your home:

Eliminate all standing water. This is the most important step. Stagnant water is necessary for mosquitos to reproduce so constantly empty buckets, birdbaths, and gutters. Avoid creating puddles by overwatering and be mindful of any spots where runoff water may be pooling.

Plant anti-mosquito plants. Many strong smelling herbs and flowers are a natural repellant. Some examples are peppermint, lavender, garlic, citronella grass, basil, and catnip.

Encourage birds to feed by welcoming them with birdhouses. Bird feeders will also attract birds but they are less likely to eat mosquitos if you load them up with seeds and nuts instead!

Consider pruning and trimming back shrubs and trees to create airflow on your property. Mosquitos love to rest in overgrown, crowded brush where there’s no breeze to hassle them.

Lastly, get in touch to discuss with us if organic applications are right for you. If you have a one-time event planned or recurring summer gathering then sometimes a single, well-timed treatment is all you need to support your newly established, sustainable anti-mosquito practices!
